A matte blue that everyone told me didn't exist became a method for any colour I want.

Bold, matte, saturated, unapologetic.

This is the story of how, and the technique I built because of it.

Colour Secrets

THE PRACTICE BEHIND COLOUR SECRETS

Person painting a blue ceramic vase at a pottery studio, with jars of blue paint and brushes on the table.

If you've spent any time in ceramics, you've heard it too: a true matte doesn't exist. So you try underglazes, because that's what everyone suggests. And underglazes are fine, but they're not bold. They're watered down, muted, translucent. Whatever colour you're chasing, blue, red, yellow, you end up with a soft hint of it, not the bold, saturated version you actually saw in your head.

I know that disappointment better than most. I lived it for years.

MY STORY

I started my ceramics journey already wanting a blue that did not exist.

I bought every premixed glaze, every powder, tried underglazes, tested and tested, looking for a matte, bold blue that wasn't flat or muted. None of it worked, matte glazes are often translucent, they don't fully cover the surface, and the colour I wanted needed to be opaque, saturated, unmistakably bold. Eventually I stopped trying to force it and went back to raw clay, working only in black and white while I figured out what I actually wanted.

Then, after I gave birth to my son, I saw it. A blue vase, exactly as I'd always imagined it, clear as anything in my mind. I decided I would make it real.

I started testing. Mixing pigment directly into clay. Wedging it in. Mixing concentrated pigment into water and applying it to the piece in different ways, over and over, through years of failed tests and failed applications, until I found my formula.

That blue was the catalyst, the thing that drove me to develop the technique in the first place. But once I had the formula, I realised it wasn't really about blue at all. It worked as a method. The same process, the same recipe, adapted to any colour I wanted, bold red, saturated yellow, deep green, whatever I was after. It took years to refine, the recipe, the application, the many different ways the same technique could be used across every colour. And it's still evolving. I'm still discovering things about it today.

COLOUR IS A UNIVERSE

Colour isn't one thing. It's tone, tint, shade, saturation, translucency, how it sits on the surface, how it catches light. I'm genuinely obsessed with all of it, and Colour Secrets comes from years of exploring that whole universe, not just chasing one blue.

Colour Secrets is built on Mason stains, not commercial glazes, and not underglazes. It's a mother recipe, one method, one process, that works for any colour you want. Learn it once with one colour, and you can apply it to every colour after that. The full recipe and application process, and how to adapt it across your own palette, is what I teach inside the course.

It's genuinely more affordable than it looks. Stains cost more upfront than commercial glaze, but they go a long way, and once you factor that in, it works out cheaper than most premixed or commercial options, without giving up the finish.

THE TECHNIQUE

Taught to students in 60+ countries. A true matte, opaque colour method, in any shade, the ceramics community said couldn't be done. It photographs beautifully, and it's even better in person.

COLOUR SECRETS WORKSHOP

The recipe, the application, and everything I've learned in years of testing, one method you can use for any colour, taught step by step, so you can stop settling for muted underglazes and start making the colour you actually want.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY…

  • “It’s nothing like glaze recipes. Colour started to feel intuitive, repeatable, and alive in my work.”

  • A tall, textured blue sculpture with an oval hole in the middle, displayed on a black pedestal against a light-colored wall.

“I finally understood bold colour in ceramics — not as recipes to follow, but as something I could actually work with and trust.”

  • Colorful ceramic tiles and round tokens arranged on a white surface.

“It completely shifted my ceramic practice. I stopped guessing and started understanding what was actually happening with colour.”

  • A blue plastic exercise ball inside a wheel with beige tiles.

“I can’t believe how long I worked without this. It changed the way I think about colour and surface entirely.”

  • “Colour stopped feeling like trial and error. I finally understood how to work with it in ceramics, rather than hoping for the best.”

“Colour stopped feeling like trial and error. I finally understood how to work with it in ceramics, rather than hoping for the best.”

You don't need years of experience. You don't need a shelf full of failed glaze tests, I already did that part for you. You just need to want colour that actually looks like what's in your head, not a watered-down version of it.

This is for beginners who want to skip the years of trial and error I went through. It's for experienced makers who are bored of glazes that behave the same way every time. It's for anyone who wants to make a piece that stops someone mid-walk, the kind people pick up, turn over, and ask, "wait, how did you get this colour?"

WHO THIS IS FOR

WHO THIS ISN'T FOR

If you're happy with your glazes and not looking to shake things up, this probably isn't for you, and that's genuinely fine.

If you want glossy and shiny, this is built for matte, bold, and opaque. Different tools for a different look.

And if you want a shortcut with no practice involved, I'll be honest: the technique itself is simple, genuinely simple, but simple doesn't mean zero effort. It gets better with practice, like anything worth learning. If you're willing to put in a little of that, this will change how you think about colour completely.

Colour Secrets started with one blue that didn't exist. Years of testing turned it into a method, bold, matte, opaque colour for any shade you want, not just the one that started it all. This isn't foundational theory. It's the real recipe and application process, refined through years of making and teaching it to students in 60+ countries, built so you can create with the kind of confidence and control that stops someone mid-walk.
