Colour Secrets
The Evolution
A practice of bold colour, intuition, and ceramic surface
Colour Secrets is an immersive ceramic workshop exploring bold, matte colour through an intuitive and deeply developed practice.
Rooted in years of making, testing, and refining my own techniques, this workshop shares the foundations of how I work with colour — including my exact recipes, application processes, and the specific pigments I use, such as the cobalt blue so many people ask about. These methods offer clarity and structure, while leaving space for adaptation and personal expression.
Rather than focusing on outcomes to copy, Colour Secrets invites you into a deeper relationship with colour. It’s about learning how colour, surface, and expression come together over time — how clear methods support intuition, and how confidence grows naturally through feeling, trust, and repetition in the act of making.
Why Colour Secrets exists
I created Colour Secrets because I know how it feels to want a bold, matte colour in ceramics — and not be able to achieve it.
For years, I tested, experimented, and searched for a way to bring the colours I imagined into clay. Underglazes often felt flat or dull. Glazes were glossy, unpredictable, or shifted in ways that took the work somewhere else entirely. What I wanted simply didn’t exist in a clear or reliable form.
Over time, through persistence, curiosity, and deep experimentation, I developed my own way of working with colour. For a long while, I kept that knowledge to myself — it was personal, hard-earned, and still evolving. But as more people began asking about my process, my surfaces, and the colours I was creating, I felt a growing pull to share what I had learned.
Colour Secrets came from that moment of readiness. From recognising that what once felt elusive could become accessible — not as shortcuts or rigid rules, but as a clear, honest pathway through something that had once been frustrating and out of reach.
The practice behind Colour Secrets
Colour Secrets exists because I had a clear vision for bold, matte colour in ceramics — and was repeatedly told it wasn’t possible.
Colour has its own language, and I needed to find a way to work with it that felt true. What emerged is a simple, intuitive method — one shaped by persistence, curiosity, and attention to detail. Like most simple things, it holds nuance, but it’s grounded, accessible, and adaptable.
This practice shares that way of making openly. It’s not about complexity or control, but about understanding colour well enough to trust it — and knowing that sometimes, the only way forward is to make what you’ve been told can’t exist.

Who this workshop is for
This workshop is for ceramic artists who feel drawn to colour — especially bold, matte surfaces — and want to understand it more deeply.
It’s for those who are tired of guessing, frustrated by dull underglazes or unpredictable glazes, and ready to develop a clearer, more intuitive relationship with colour in their work.
Whether you’re early in your practice or have years of experience, Colour Secrets is designed for artists who value both structure and intuition — and who want to create colour that feels intentional, expressive, and their own.
Once you understand the technique
Once you understand the Colour Secrets technique, colour stops being something you chase — and becomes something you can create.
The method isn’t limited to one look or palette. From bold, vivid colours to softer, more muted tones, you’re able to mix, adjust, and refine colour in a way that responds to your own taste and the work you want to make. Rather than relying on what already exists, you gain the freedom to build colours intentionally — and to let your personal colour language emerge over time.
This is where the process becomes genuinely exciting: colour opens up, instead of narrowing down.
A different relationship with colour than glazes
Working with glazes can be exhausting. Between unpredictability, surface changes, and repeated testing, it often feels like you’re fighting the material rather than working with it.
Colour Secrets offers a different experience.
Instead of guessing or hoping for the best, the process feels clear, grounded, and responsive — more like a conversation than a struggle. Colour becomes something you understand and trust, rather than something that drains energy or attention.
For many artists, this shift alone feels like a relief — and a return to enjoying the act of making.
An expanded exploration of bold, matte colour for ceramics — evolving my most-loved workshop through years of making, refining techniques, and teaching globally. From foundational colour work to layered, intuitive applications, this workshop supports ceramic artists in creating with confidence, freedom, and depth.
