Colour Explorer

Welcome! I created this mini book because so many artists ask how I get such bold colours in my ceramics and the truth is, it’s all about the right materials and the right method. This is a little slice of the bigger journey, but I promise, it’ll already shift the way you see colour and application.

Let’s be honest — getting rich, bold colour in ceramics can feel like witchcraft.

You try the underglazes. They dry chalky, patchy, or just… blah. You mix pigment straight into clay hoping for a miracle, only to spend hours on something that still doesn’t pop. And don’t even get me started on layering — it’s a gamble every time, and not the fun kind. The truth? You’re working way too hard for results that aren’t even close to what you imagined. You know that feeling — when the piece comes out of the kiln and it’s just not it. Enough of that.

Here’s what changes everything.

I stopped following the rules and created my own technique. I use raw ceramic stains (yep, the same ones most people overlook), apply them after the bisque with a method that lets you layer, blend, and fully control the outcome. It’s bold, matte, and 100% repeatable. No more guessing. No more dull disappointments. Just clean, striking colour — exactly how you want it. Once you know the recipes and understand the method, it’s honestly foolproof.

You’ll feel like a colour wizard.

Inside the full Colour Secrets course, I give you the real-deal formulas, my exact layering process, and the behind-the-scenes magic that makes the colour stick. This isn’t about following trends — it’s about building your own creative voice through colour that feels like you. Whether you’re a beginner or deep into your practice, this method will completely shift how you approach surface design.

Let’s get into it — you’re going to love what’s possible.

Still Have a Question?

Still Have a Question?

Still Have a Question? Still Have a Question?

Totally get it — here’s the part where most people go, “Okay wait, I just have one more question…” Here are the most common ones I get…

Can I use this with mid-fire or must be porcelain? Or stoneware?

Yes and yes. You can use this technique with any clay body. Porcelain, stoneware, groggy, smooth — it works across the board. I personally fire to cone 9, but you can go lower or a bit higher. What matters most is how you apply and layer the pigment — and that’s exactly what I teach.

What about firing range, does it need to be exact?

Nope! This method is super flexible. Whether you’re firing to cone 6, cone 10, or playing in between, you can get beautiful results. I’ve tested across a wide range, and it holds up beautifully.

Is it food safe?

Ahh, the golden question. I’ve got you. The base technique itself isn’t designed specifically for functional ware, but I do include some great options if food-safety is your thing. (And yes, some of them look amazing.)

How long do I have access to the course?

Forever-ever. It’s all pre-recorded and available on your own time. You can start today, tomorrow, or next month — there’s no expiry and no pressure. Just the freedom to learn when it actually works for your life.

What if I’m still pretty new to ceramics?

That’s actually perfect. You don’t need to be a glaze chemist to make this work — and honestly, sometimes beginners pick it up even faster. If you know how to bisque-fire a piece, you’re ready.

Can I do this in a community studio?

Yes! No special equipment needed. Just your usual kiln access, a brush, and the pigments (which I help you find). Everything else? Covered inside.
